New Dates For Marion County Fair

Indianapolis, IN (May 22, 2020) BGI — Save the dates, the 90th Marion County Fair will be held July 4-12 at the Marion County Fairgrounds located at 7300 East Troy Avenue. It was originally scheduled for June 19-28, but officials decided to postpone the fair until July, when the county would likely will be nearly completely re-opened.

Purdue Extension, which oversees the state’s county fairs, has prohibited in-person meetings and events until July 1. They issued a statement that allows counties to open fairs if that county reaches the final stages in the Back on Track plan issued by state officials. They have also developed virtual models for counties that may not meet the state’s requirements for Stage 5.

Accordingly, county fairs would have to maintain required physical distancing , offer daily health screenings for all employees and volunteers, and increase their hand sanitizing stations and cleaning stations. The Marion County 4-H continues its partnership with the fair, and the chapter has participated in physical distancing events, including scheduled webinars.

Right now, admission to the fair is only $5.00 per day, and a 10 day pass will set you back just $25.00.

Tickets can be purchased HERE

History of the Marion County Fair

The Marion County Fair was established in 1930 as a street fair in New Bethel or Wannamaker. Following several moves in the Wannamaker area, it was relocated onto 123 acres of land at Troy Avenue and Fisher Road. There are presently 17 permanent buildings on the grounds.

Gen Con 2020 Cancelled

Indianapolis, IN (May 19, 2020) BGI - Gen Con, one of the largest conventions in Indianapolis and the largest table top gaming convention in North America is cancelled. Gen Con announced that due to ongoing concerns stemming from the spread of COVID-19, Gen Con 2020 and all Pop-Up Gen Con events for this year are cancelled.

Despite being one of the most popular and successful gaming conventions, the organizers reminded their audience that they are still a small business, and the decision to cancel is very difficult, both “emotionally and financially.”

For attendees who pre-purchased badges for Gen Con 2020, organizers ask that rather than requesting a refund, they instead allow this year’s badge to be applied to Gen Con 2021 instead, as a means to “keep staff employed through these unprecedented times and come back better than ever next year.”

Gen Con Online

As a way to still connect with their audience during quarantine, Gen Con organizers have also announced they will be hosting Gen Con Online – a “virtual convention featuring a slate of events and programming you can attend from the safety of your devices” at home. The event is slated to take place July 30 – August 2, the dates in which the original convention would have taken place.

Gen Con will return to the Indiana Convention Center Aug. 5-8, 2021. Read the original article from Gen Con. Badge holders for 2020 have the option of rolling their badges forward for 2021. For more details go to their website.

Amtrak Suspends Guest Rewards

Beech Grove, Indiana (May 5, 2020) - In a letter dated April 30, Rail Passengers Association President Jim Mathews said, “Amtrak Guest Rewards points benefit will temporarily be suspended. We know this is a popular benefit, but we have to purchase these points, so it’s not a benefit we can responsibly continue to provide while revenues are down.”

Mathews also said the employees of the Association are working from home, memberships are down, and contributions are down. The production and mailing of the printed version of Passengers Voice newsletter will temporarily cease. Passengers Voice newsletter will still be available online and as a downloadable PDF, in both present and past editions.

The Association remains active, assuring that the CARES Act included funding for passenger rail - $1 billion for Amtrak and $16 billion for urban transit systems, with another $4 billion dedicated to rural transit, according to Mathews. The Association conducted a Virtual Day on the Hill on March 31, connecting with 132 House offices and 53 Senate offices. Members of Congress asked for the Association’s help in identifying top priorities in rail transit.

Mathews testified before the Federal Railroad Administration to share the Association’s thoughts on the Metrics and Minimum Standards for Intercity rail transit.

Stimulus Checks Sent to Foreign Workers

Indianapolis, IN (May 1, 2020) - Thousands of foreign workers, many living overseas, are receiving stimulus checks designated for U.S. residents due to an unforeseen glitch that funneled taxpayer dollars to other countries, according to tax consultants and the recipients themselves.

College-age workers who spent time in the U.S. in the last two years — some of whom returned home long before the coronavirus pandemic — have been surprised to find $1,200 checks deposited into their bank accounts. And with no clear guidance on how to return it, they’re holding onto the money or racing to spend it before the Internal Revenue Service realizes the mistake.

The incorrect payments were likely distributed to thousands of foreigners in April, said Donna Kepley, president of the tax firm Arctic International who has spoken with dozens of clients over the past two weeks. The error stems from a common tax-filing blunder, particularly for those on F-1 student and J-1 exchange visas. These workers, studying at universities and working summer jobs, often turn to TurboTax and other e-filing systems without knowing that the systems are designed only for U.S. residents.

As a result, many temporary foreign workers each year file the wrong tax forms. The IRS rarely catches the error because nonimmigrant workers’ Social Security numbers have the same number of digits as those of U.S. citizens, and therefore appear to be identical, accountants say.

Usually, the error doesn’t much matter, but this year it’s causing the IRS to think certain foreign workers are eligible for one-time stimulus payments. The glitch affects both workers in the U.S. and those who recently left the country.

There were 1.1 million foreign students in the U.S. last year, according to the Institute of International Education, and the government granted nearly 400,000 J-1 temporary visas. Accountants with expertise in nonresident taxes say the majority of these workers either don’t file or file incorrectly, and in recent days they’ve been flooded with calls about mistaken payments.

“We were contacted by a lot of our clients all of a sudden, on the one day when they started hitting their accounts or that the checks started going out, asking what to do,” Kepley said. “And so we had to try to figure out how to return it, which is not easy.”

Three student visa holders who spoke to POLITICO said they had received the payments this month but had been unable to contact the IRS. All of them were motivated to return the money out of fear they would be banned from receiving visas in the future — or worse, deported — if the government learned they had committed tax fraud.

“One day I just saw my account and I had 1,200 bucks without even requesting anything,” said a French citizen who completed a graduate program at University of Toledo in 2018. “I knew they were planning to give stimulus payments but I didn’t know when it was happening.”

The student left the U.S. in January 2019 and now lives in Zurich. After scouring online forums to see if others were having the same problem, the student learned that he had filed the wrong form — 1040 instead of 1040-NR — through TurboTax. The IRS, believing him to be a U.S. resident or citizen, deposited the money into his account on April 15.

The same week, the student said he called and emailed the IRS at least three times but never got through.

“I never tried to commit fraud or anything,” the student said. “I contacted the IRS to tell them that I’m not in the U.S. anymore and that I should not have received this stimulus check and I wanted to find a way to give the money back.”

“I don’t really want to use that money because it doesn’t really belong to me,” he added.

In an email, a University of Toledo spokesperson said the university recently gave additional information to students on how they could file an amended tax return to send back their stimulus checks.

The problem is common among universities. In a survey of more than 500 schools last week, 43 percent said they had students and scholars who believed they received a payment in error.

“There are so many people who aren’t getting the check who could use it, and so when you see people who weren’t intended it’s disconcerting,” said Enda Kelleher, vice president for Sprintax, the tax firm that conducted the survey.
